Top 5 Favorite Current Manga (June 2025)
As stated before, surprisingly, these posts get a bit of traction. Unlike before, I’m modifying this list slightly to whatever I happen to be currently reading. I mention this ’cause I’ve been finally wrapping up some older, completed manga titles that I never finished. Also, I repurpose old posts when I am pressed for time. 😜 I still miss Frieren. 😭
5. A Certain Scientific Railgun
I’m currently blogging A Certain Scientific Railgun manga. I decided not to do a series synopsis, but I can if asked for.
Anyway, the manga switched to prequel mode a while back. I’m still on the lookout for retconning as that is a danger when doing prequel stuff. For example, the relationship between Mikoto and Misaki is slightly different here from the start of the manga series. I think that’s because of the Dolly story that came after the two were introduced (also containing its own prequel material in the form of flashbacks). Also, with Mikoto has a different roommate before Kuroko who’s never been mentioned, I’m mildly concerned about retconning. Oh well. We’ll see how it goes.
I do have volume 18 and 19 to blog at some point. I’m so behind. I have now read them and have my notes. While the story is interesting, I’ve so far found it slightly less compelling than pushing the timeline forward.
The series is licensed by Seven Seas.
4. D-Frag!
I volume-review D-Frag! and have done so for years now. So I’m not going to bother with a series synopsis at this time.
This series is a harem title. As longtime readers know, I have a weakness for harem titles. All of the girls in the main character Kenji’s orbit like him to one degree or other. The girls don’t fight over Kenji, though some conflict can arise. For his part, Kenji just finds most of them pretty annoying, which leads to other humor.
Also, I love crazy, unexpected, wacky humor. D-Frag is full of that. There’s really no way of predicting what will happen from chapter to chapter, even within a multi-chapter story. As such, reading this manga feels very much like going on some insane roller coaster ride. I love it!
In more recent times, the manga isn’t as strong as it once was. I think a lot of this stems from the student council president getting heavily nerfed from her sassy, confident, powerful persona to one with actual flaws. However, when a new chapter comes out each month, I do enjoy reading it. And I enjoy rereading things when a new volume comes out.
I recently reviewed Volume 18, if you are interested.
The series is licensed by Seven Seas.
3. Soara and the House of Monsters
I only recently finally reviewed the first volume of this fun, fantasy manga series. It centers around a young, orphaned, human, female warrior named Soara. She’s trained all her short life to fight monsters. However, when the war between monsters and humans stopped, Soara suddenly finds herself adrift. She stumbles upon some dwarves and observes them building a new home for a tribe of goblins. Since both are monster races, she decides to observe.
Eventually, Soara is drafted into the three dwarves’ party, where she travels around the monster side of the world, assisting in building non-human species homes, something she’s never had. In doing so, she comes to understand more about the monster world.
The artwork for the manga series is enjoyable to look at. Soara is a girl boss, but because she’s in a fantasy world, I tend to let this slide. Plus, she’s on a journey of self discovery and is a likable character.
Seven Seas has the license for Soara and the House of Monsters.
2. Sweetness and Lightning
I needed an excuse to put the Sweetness and Lightning manga in the list. Thus my shifting “current manga” to mean “what I’m currently reading.” 😜 Since this is my first time mentioning the manga, I’ll do a series synopsis. However, if you’d like to read my volume reviews, check out this link.
The series centers around the widower Kouhei and his young daughter, Tsumugi. Kouhei becomes concerned about the meals he makes for his daughter. During a hanabi event to look at the sakura, Kouhei encounters one of his female, high school students named Kotori. This results in Kouhei and Tsumugi frequenting Kotori’s mother’s closed restaurant to cook meals together with Kotori. The result is a close friendship between student and teacher as well as a slice of life set of stories, centering around various dishes.
While this is a cooking manga, the romantic hints Kotori feels for Kouhei is the element I kinda like most. Weird since the manga’s creator tried to keep this element squashed down quite a bit. Still, even without this element, I did enjoy the cooking stories as well as watching Tsumugi growing up.
Kodansha Comics has the license.
1. Spy x Family
Finally, at number 1 is Spy x Family. This is another series I’m blogging. I’m not doing a series synopsis.
What makes this manga so great is how wholesome and interesting it is. I love the fictional setting, reminiscent of a 1960s East/West Germany. Anya is a typical child. As such, it is easy to relate to her way of thinking. On the other hand, her telepathic powers allow her to do things she wouldn’t ordinarily be able to do. Anya is quite the lovable, hilarious, and scene stealing character.
Loid and Yor are amazing individuals. Both characters get “mission” stories for their real job. At the same time, both are learning to become parents to Anya. And whoa be to anyone who threatens Anya ’cause Yor will go mama bear on them. 😂 Add to the mix the slowly budding romance between Yor and Loid.
This is my favorite manga, bar none. And since Frieren is on hiatus, I can’t imagine anything dethroning this manga series for a while.
